Between 1858 and 1865, Edgar Degas painted a small number of large compositions with several figures and themes, which he drew from biblical stories and classical antiquity.
This dynamic sketch is the most developed study of the subject, which the author began to explore at the end of 1857. The picture shows the brave young warrior David, who defeated the huge Philistine soldier Goliath, thereby saving the Israelite army.
