In the middle of the pale green room stands the ballet master, leaning on a long stick. Around him the dancers – some waiting, one fixing her hair, one scratching her back, a small dog lying at the feet of the dancer in the foreground. In the left corner stands the watering can used to damp the floor.

Degas did not arrange the scene. The figures stand as though someone had just come through the door: some cut by the edge, others turned away. The rehearsal room interested him more than the stage, because there nobody is trying to look beautiful.
