A drawing room with pale blue floral wallpaper. On the left a woman stands in full black mourning, her hand resting on the table; beside her the elder daughter in a black dress and white pinafore, hands clasped. In the centre the younger daughter sits on a chair, one leg tucked under her, turned toward her father.
On the right the father sits in an armchair at the desk, seen from behind and in three-quarter view, in a grey-brown jacket; papers lie before him. Above the table hangs a framed red-chalk drawing, above the mantel a gilt mirror and a clock in an inlaid case. At the lower right a small dog walks out of the picture.
Four figures, four lines of sight, and not one of them meets another. The canvas is two and a half metres wide – Degas’s early family portrait, and at the same time a scene in which the family does not hold together.
