A man in an armchair
Koller sits in a deep green armchair, in a dark blue-green suit with a white collar and black tie. An open book lies in his lap, held with both hands; the hands are painted with the same care as the face.
A wall of books
Books surround the scene on three sides — stacked in piles, ranged on shelves, turned spine outward. Their red, grey, blue and olive spines make a pattern in their own right and give the portrait its rhythm.
Green and red
The armchair is the only large cool plane in the painting; beneath it a red-brown carpet runs in broad bands. Schiele balanced these three zones — the green, the red and the darkness of the books — without a contour line.
Technique and format of the original
The original is painted in oil on canvas, measuring 140.3 × 110 cm (inv. 4296), and hangs today in the Belvedere in Vienna.
