By copying the artwork of the old masters, Edgar Degas sometimes tried to discover their painting techniques. When creating the oil on canvas Calvary, he imitated the method of the painter Mantegna, who used the technique of applying layers of cool and warm colors to the canvas, using several different types of coatings.
