Who is shown
Victor Ritter von Bauer was a Moravian industrialist and one of Schiele’s patrons. The portrait was made in 1918, the last year of the painter’s life, when Schiele was finally receiving the commissions he had long wanted.
The pale suit
The seated figure wears a pale, almost white suit with a waistcoat and tie. Schiele laid it on in broad soft planes of greyish white with green and pink lights, so that the suit reads as one large bright plane at the centre.
The yellow bench
The sitter is on a wooden bench in strong yellow and ochre, with a striped cushion. Its back and legs are painted openly, the construction not hidden — the same angular wood as in Schiele’s other portraits of that year.
A wall of boards
Behind the figure runs a wall of horizontal boards in yellow-green and brown strokes. The background is not empty: it is a painted surface carrying as much attention as the face.
Technique and format of the original
The original is painted in oil on canvas, measuring 140.6 × 109.8 cm (inv. 3158), and hangs today in the Belvedere in Vienna.
Provenance
The painting was owned by Karl Grünwald in Vienna and was acquired in 1930 by Wolko Gartenberg in Vienna. The Belvedere’s published record of ownership ends there; the work is today in the Belvedere in Vienna.
