Claude MonetCharing Cross Bridge, London
Description
Charing Cross Bridge, London is from 1901 and was made through the window of the Savoy above the Thames. The railway bridge is only a horizontal stroke, and the train crossing it a cloud of smoke lighter than the sky. The painter worked on dozens of canvases at once in London, changing them by the hour as the fog shifted.
The original is oil on canvas, 65 × 92.2 cm, an elongated format. It is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, accession number 1933.1150.
Our reproduction is a hand-painted oil painting on canvas. It is not a print. Every canvas is painted individually by an artist, so no two are ever exactly alike. Soft greys and oranges sit well with contemporary furniture.

“As a painter I have done what I could, and that seems to me enough. I do not wish to be compared to the great masters of the past, and my painting belongs to criticism; that is sufficient.”
