Description
The Customs House at Varengeville is from 1897. The hut on the cliff edge had been built to watch for smugglers, and it gave Monet the only solid form in an otherwise open scene — sea, grass, sky. The painter returned to that hut over several years, taking it from different sides and at different hours.
The original is oil on canvas, 65.6 × 92.8 cm, an elongated format. It is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, accession number 1933.1149.
