The hand-painted Egon Schiele painting Houses in Winter (View from the Studio) is an oil reproduction of a work from 1907. The original is held by the Belvedere in Vienna.
A view through a window
The motif is exactly what the title says: what the seventeen-year-old Schiele saw when he looked out of his studio window. There is no composing, no arranging — only a slice of roof and yard as it stood.
Roof and chimneys
The upper half is a red-brown tiled roof with a thin layer of snow along the ridge. Four heavy chimneys rise from it, painted as plain upright blocks in brown and grey.
Green shutters and a red wall
At the left, in shadow, a wooden roof structure with vivid green shutters is just readable, and beneath it a red brick stack. These two colours are the only accents in an otherwise earthen palette.
Bare branches
In the foreground thin bare branches of a shrub or tree climb across the whole lower part of the painting. They are laid on in thin quick strokes and set the scene behind a mesh the eye has to break through.
Technique and format of the original
The original is not canvas: it is painted in oil on cardboard, in the small format 24 × 17.8 cm (inv. 5493), and hangs today in the Belvedere in Vienna.
