Egon Schiele – Interior, 1907
The hand-painted Egon Schiele painting Interior is an oil reproduction of a work from 1907. The original is held by the Belvedere in Vienna.
The early Schiele
The work was made in 1907, when Schiele was a seventeen-year-old student at the Vienna academy. There is none of the sharp line he is known for here — this is a painter learning to look at light.
A window with a red curtain
The centre is taken by a tall white-framed window, beside it a heavy red curtain with tassels, gathered into folds. The red is the strongest colour in the painting, laid on in dense wet strokes.
An open door
At the right a door opens into the next room, where dark furniture and a pale plane are just readable in the half-light. The space doubles without telling any story.
A reflecting floor
The lower third is a wooden floor in brown and reddish bands. The light from the window falls into it as an upright bright column — and it is that reflection that holds the whole composition together.
Technique and format of the original
The original is not canvas: it is painted in oil on cardboard, measuring 39.1 × 31.2 cm (inv. 6621), and hangs today in the Belvedere in Vienna.
