The painting is a portrait of Madeleine Knoblock, Seurat’s mistress, who is glistening in front of a mirror in a small room. In place of the vase with flowers, the artist first painted his portrait. He later covered it with a vase of flowers.
Seurat lived secretly with Madeleine. In 1890, at an exhibition at the Salon des Indépendants, he showed the only known portrait of his lover Madeleine: Young Woman Powdering Herself.
