The caryatid is a classical Greek architectural element: a female figure carrying a frame instead of a column. Many of Modigliani’s works on paper are sketches and watercolours of caryatids. The artist adds an Egyptian look to them – the figures are depicted in a flat graphic style, giving them the appearance of hieroglyphs. The caryatids are full of emotional tension, which is unusual for this traditionally static architectural element.
