Two men sit side by side in front of a window. The one on the left wears a black top hat and a dark coat, has a grey moustache and holds a small object in his right hand; his look travels down and away.
The man on the right is younger, dark-haired and bearded, his hand raised to his chin and mouth. He alone looks straight out at us, and it is that look which carries the whole canvas. This is Degas himself; the older man is the painter Évariste de Valernes, his friend.
Behind them roof after Parisian roof opens out in grey and white strokes, barely worked, almost washed away. At the left a dark vertical curtain closes the edge. The paint is thin throughout and the background was left unfinished.
