Description
Bordighera was painted in 1884, during the months Monet spent working on the Italian Riviera. The pines in the foreground twist in front of a sea far more turquoise than the one he knew in the north; behind them the town glitters and the mountains rise above it. From Bordighera the painter wrote that the colour here seemed almost excessive — which is exactly what he put on the canvas.
The original is oil on canvas, 64.8 × 81.3 cm. It is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, accession number 1922.426.
Our reproduction is a hand-painted oil painting on canvas. It is not a print. Every canvas is painted individually by an artist, so no two are ever exactly alike. The warm light and the blue carry well in a room with cool-toned walls.

“As a painter I have done what I could, and that seems to me enough. I do not wish to be compared to the great masters of the past, and my painting belongs to criticism; that is sufficient.”
