Description
Rocks at Port-Goulphar was painted in 1886 on Belle-Île, the island off the coast of Brittany. That autumn Monet took on the wild western side: the cliffs drop straight into the water, the sea below them is dense and dark, without a single quiet point. Here the painter gives up the soft river light and lays the colour in shorter, harder touches.
The original is oil on canvas, 66 × 81.8 cm. It is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, accession number 1964.210, and entered the collection as a gift of the Borland family, from 1964.
