Claude MonetThe Argenteuil Basin
Description
The Argenteuil Basin was painted in 1872, Monet’s first year at Argenteuil. The Seine fills the lower half of the canvas, the sailing boats sit still along the bank, and the sky carries the loosened clouds this painter is known for. The strokes are short and kept apart: the colour is laid so that the eye assembles the reflection itself.
The original is oil on canvas, 60 × 80 cm. It is held by %INST%, inventory number %ACC%, and entered the collection in 1911.
Our reproduction is a hand-painted oil painting on canvas. It is not a print. Every canvas is painted individually by an artist, so no two are ever exactly alike.

Claude Monet
“As a painter I have done what I could, and that seems to me enough. I do not wish to be compared to the great masters of the past, and my painting belongs to criticism; that is sufficient.”
