The Railway Bridge at Argenteuil is a hand-painted oil reproduction of a river motif by Monet: a pale concrete viaduct on tall piers crosses the whole canvas, a train runs over it with a white plume of steam, and two figures and a sailing boat stand at the bank below.

What is on the canvas
The canvas is landscape. Across the full width, from the left edge to the right, spans a
pale concrete railway viaduct carried on tall cylindrical piers; the railing along
the top is indicated by a close run of short vertical strokes. A dark train crosses it, and right
of centre a white plume of steam rises from it and merges with the cloud. At the
lower left is a sandy bank with green grass, and two figures stand on it: one in a
dark coat and a pale hat, the other in a light jacket and light trousers. Moored beside them is a
sailing boat with a pale sail and a brown-yellow hull; further out, right of centre, a second and
smaller one. The lower right half is the Seine, painted in short blue strokes, in which the piers
repeat as vertical reflections. Behind the bridge runs a low green bank with poplars and a
lattice-work iron structure. The upper third is a pale blue sky with white and lilac cloud.
A structure across the whole canvas
What is unusual in this scene is how little Monet softens the bridge. The viaduct cuts the
canvas almost horizontally and without a break, and the piers divide it into even sections — that
is an engineer’s drawing, not a landscape’s. It is exactly why everything else is soft: the water
in short flickering strokes, the steam as a loosened cloud, the bank in soft shapes. This oil on
canvas reproduction sets an industrial form in the middle of a river scene and makes no attempt to
reconcile them — the modern structure and the Sunday walk stand side by side, and that was the new
thing at the time.

established. You will therefore find no year of execution, no collection name and no accession
number on this page. We say what is visible on the canvas and nothing beyond it.
How it works on the wall
The format is landscape, in a ratio of about 4 : 3, and works best at eye level, because the
bridge itself makes the horizontal the eye is looking for. 50 x 40 cm and 60 x 45 cm suit a hallway
or a smaller wall. 70 x 50 cm is the usual choice above a sideboard. 80 x 61 cm is the
closest to the original and is therefore the most faithful choice. 90 x 70 cm and
100 x 80 cm are balanced above a sofa, while 120 x 90 cm and 150 x 110 cm are meant for large
walls, where the individual piers can be told apart clearly. Because the range of colour is light
and blue-green, hand-painted canvas art of this kind freshens a room and sits well on a white or
grey wall.
Hand-painted, not printed
This fine art reproduction is made with a brush, not a printer. A print lays the colour in an
evenly thin film, so water and bridge come out equally smooth. Applied by hand the water is made
of hundreds of short, thicker strokes standing above the canvas, while the bridge is drawn in
quiet, thin shapes. Light is returned differently by those two surfaces, so the river flickers as
you walk past while the structure stays still — a print cannot do that, because there everything is
the same thickness. Because it is handwork, every copy differs a little.

The work is painted to order, so the lead time is 15 to 45 days, depending on
the size chosen and how busy the studio is. Before anything is sent we send you a photograph of the
finished piece for approval; only once you confirm do we stretch the canvas on a wooden frame and
prepare it for hanging. As wall decor it belongs where there is enough daylight, because it lives
