Claude MonetRouen Cathedral, Portal
Description
Rouen Cathedral, Portal is from 1893 and belongs to the series in which Monet painted the same façade again and again at different hours. The stone here is not grey: it is built from blue, ochre and violet layers that break into separate strokes when you stand close. The painter rented a room opposite the cathedral so that he could work on several canvases at once.
The original is oil on canvas, 100.1 × 65.9 cm, an upright format. It is held by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, accession number 1963.10.49.
Our reproduction is a hand-painted oil painting on canvas. It is not a print. Every canvas is painted individually by an artist, so no two are ever exactly alike. A tall upright format fills a narrow wall between a door and a window well.

Claude Monet
“As a painter I have done what I could, and that seems to me enough. I do not wish to be compared to the great masters of the past, and my painting belongs to criticism; that is sufficient.”
