Claude MonetRouen Cathedral, Grey Weather
Description
Rouen Cathedral, Grey Weather dates from 1892 and shows the same portal as the other canvases of the series, this time under an overcast sky. Without sun the stone loses its gold and stays in greys, greenish tones and pale violet; the form softens and the edges dissolve. The painter wanted to show that weather changes not only the colour but the apparent weight of the building.
The original is oil on canvas, 100.2 × 65.4 cm, an upright format. It is held by the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, accession number RF 1999.
Our reproduction is a hand-painted oil painting on canvas. It is not a print. Every canvas is painted individually by an artist, so no two are ever exactly alike. A quiet grey works well with warm wood and light walls.

Claude Monet
“As a painter I have done what I could, and that seems to me enough. I do not wish to be compared to the great masters of the past, and my painting belongs to criticism; that is sufficient.”
