Description
Rouen Cathedral, the Portal and Saint-Romain Tower dates from 1893. This version takes in more of the building than the others in the series: beside the portal the north tower is visible too, so the composition stands taller and steeper. The painter builds the stone out of thick paint, so that the surface of the canvas itself catches the light.
The original is oil on canvas, 106 × 73 cm, an upright format. It is held by the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, accession number RF 2001.
