Claude MonetRouen Cathedral, the Portal from the Front
Description
Rouen Cathedral, the Portal from the Front dates from 1892 and belongs to the series Monet painted from a rented window opposite the church. The stone is not drawn but built up out of thick paint, so that the surface of the canvas is almost as rough as the façade itself. The painter took the same portal more than thirty times, each time under different light; this version is in warm browns.
The original is oil on canvas, 107 × 74 cm, so an upright format. It is held by the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, accession number RF 2779.
Our reproduction is a hand-painted oil painting on canvas. It is not a print. Every canvas is painted individually by an artist, so no two are ever exactly alike. An upright format fills a narrow wall or the space between two windows well.

“As a painter I have done what I could, and that seems to me enough. I do not wish to be compared to the great masters of the past, and my painting belongs to criticism; that is sufficient.”
