Claude MonetStill Life with Meat
Description
Still Life with Meat is an early work of 1864, from the years when Monet was still looking for his own way. A cut of meat rests on white cloth beside a pot; the colour is dense and the handling far darker than what the painter later became known for. That is exactly what makes it interesting: it shows him before Impressionism.
The original is oil on canvas, 24 × 33 cm, accession number RF 1675. The work entered the French national collections in 1906.
Our reproduction is a hand-painted oil painting on canvas. It is not a print. Every canvas is painted individually by an artist, so no two are ever exactly alike. A small still life sits well in a kitchen or dining room, where it is seen close up.

“As a painter I have done what I could, and that seems to me enough. I do not wish to be compared to the great masters of the past, and my painting belongs to criticism; that is sufficient.”
