Claude MonetBazille and Camille (Study for “Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe”)
Description
Bazille and Camille is from 1865 and is a study for the large Luncheon on the Grass, which Monet never completed in the form he had planned. The painter Frédéric Bazille posed for the male figure and Camille Doncieux, whom he later married, for the female one. Light falls through the foliage in scattered patches — that was precisely the problem he was practising.
The original is oil on canvas, 93 × 68.9 cm, an upright format. It is held by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, accession number 1970.17.41.
