Description

Year of creation: 1885–1890
Original size: 92 cm x 73 cm
Painting style: Impressionism
Original technique: Oil on canvas
Located: São Paulo Museum of Art, São Paulo (inv. MASP.00082)

Four dancers crowd into the right two thirds of the canvas, seen close to, and the one at the far right is cut by the edge. All lean and bend to the left with outstretched arms, so that the bodies form a diagonal from the lower left towards the upper right.

The skirts are red and violet on the one in front, turquoise green on the one at the right and pale violet on the third; the bodices are red-orange, purple and yellow-green. The hair is reddish brown, pinned high and dressed with pale flowers. The arms are bare and painted in orange and rose tones.

The left third is taken by the stage scenery: green and yellow foliage, the trunk of a tree and a blue-green opening at the upper left. At the lower left the floor is dark olive green. The colour is laid on thick and very freely, almost as pastel, and carries the whole more than the drawing does.

Our version is a hand-painted oil painting on canvas. Each canvas is made individually, in the size and frame you choose.

100% hand-painted paintings

Every painting is painted by an artist with a brush on canvas – never a print.
