The hand-painted Egon Schiele painting Krumau on the Vltava (The Small Town IV) is an oil reproduction of a work from 1914. The original is held by the Leopold Museum in Vienna.
A town without streets
The houses are stacked one above another, with no road and no square. Schiele looks across from the far bank and presses them into a single plane, so that roofs and façades overlap like cards in a fan.
Coloured shutters
Small planes of colour light up among the brown and ochre walls: blue, red and green shutters, yellow façades, a white gable. Those small colours are what keep the eye moving across the full width.
The black river
A wide dark band runs along the bottom edge — the Vltava. It is painted almost without reflection, a solid black plane on which the town stands without being mirrored in it.
Krumau, his mother’s town
Český Krumlov, in German Krumau, was the birthplace of Schiele’s mother. He returned to it all his life and painted it in several versions; this one carries the designation “The Small Town IV”.
Technique and format of the original
The original is painted in oil and black chalk on canvas, measuring 99.5 × 120.5 cm (inv. LM 655), and hangs today in the Leopold Museum in Vienna.
