Description

Georges Seurat, Study for La Grande Jatte: right, middle distance (1886)

This is a study on wood for the large canvas A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, which hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago and which this shelf also carries. The painting here treats only the right-hand middle distance: a group of figures in shade with grass behind them. The original is in the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, inventory number RF 2828.

A study, not the finished canvas

This is a preparatory panel, not a small version of the completed work. The Chicago canvas is over two metres wide; this panel is 25 × 16 cm.

What Seurat was testing

On a surface this small he was working out the balance between lit grass and the shade under the trees – an arrangement he then carried into the large composition.

The original

Oil on wood, 25 × 16 cm, painted 1886. Musée d’Orsay, Paris; inventory number RF 2828.

How yours is made

Every canvas we supply is a hand-painted oil painting, not a print. A painter works it stroke by stroke at the size you choose.
