Georges Seurat, The Morning Walk (1885)
The Morning Walk is an upright painting on wood, 15.7 × 24.9 cm: a narrow slice of riverbank, trees at the edges, and one small figure by the water. Seurat made it in 1885. The original is in the National Gallery, London, inventory number NG6557.
An upright slice
The format is tall and narrow, which is unusual among Seurat’s panels. The trees act as a frame and the figure is small and set low, so the eye reads the water before the walker.
The stroke before the dot
The paint is laid in short crisscross marks. This is the technique of the years before pointillism, and it leaves the surface livelier than the later, more ordered canvases.
