Description

Lolotte – a hand-painted reproduction of the Modigliani

Lolotte is a Modigliani the museum places in June 1917, and as a fine art reproduction it is one of the most picturesque on this shelf: a woman in a wide-brimmed black hat, curled hair, and a spray of flowers at her shoulder. The original is held by the Musée national d’art moderne at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Ours is hand-painted in oil on canvas.

What is on the canvas

The sitter is shown to the chest against a dark ground. She wears a black wide-brimmed hat, from under which reddish-gold curls fall on both sides of the face. The face is cream-pink and slightly turned; the eyes are not symmetrical but both carry iris and pupil, greenish-grey under strong black lash lines. The nose is drawn in outline, the mouth small and dark red. A long bare neck runs into a dark garment with a deep neckline. At the lower right stands a spray of flowers — a red rose and some greenery. The signature is at the upper right, in pale lettering.

A picture that once had another name

The museum record also gives this work’s former title: Woman with a Hat. That is worth reading as a caution — the titles of Modigliani’s pictures are not always his own and they change over time, so they should be read as labels rather than as signatures. The museum writes the year in square brackets, as June 1917, meaning attributed rather than documented, and we carry it the same way. It bought the work in 1932 — so the picture was already in the museum before 1933 — and that is the only ownership fact it publishes, so we assert nothing about the rest of the chain.

The record of the original

The original is oil on canvas. The museum measures it 55 cm high and 35.5 cm wide; we give width first, so on our page it reads 35.5 x 55 cm, and the specification names the order in words as well. ⚠️ The sources disagree about the inventory number: the museum prints JP 558 P, while the public database carries a different string that reads as a deposit reference. We print the museum’s, because on its own holdings the museum is the authority, and we mention the other so that it does not simply vanish. It is signed at the upper right. The proportions of our canvas follow the original.

What you receive

Our painter works the picture by hand, oil on canvas, at the size you choose. The subject is dark and rich: a black hat, gold-red curls, a single spray of colour at the shoulder. That is why it works on a light wall, where the darkness can open out, and in a room where a painting is allowed to be decorative — a bedroom, a dining room, a sitting room. When the canvas is finished we photograph it and send you the photograph for approval before it leaves the studio. You choose the frame in our 3D application, and our reproductions on canvas leave the atelier stretched. Every painting we make is hand-painted and never printed.
