Description

Woman with a White Collar – hand-painted reproductions on canvas after Modigliani

Woman with a White Collar is a Modigliani of 1917, and the museum that keeps it also says who is in it: Lunia Czechowska. Among our reproductions on canvas it is one of the most reserved on this shelf. The original is held by the Musée de Grenoble. Ours is hand-painted in oil on canvas.

What is on the canvas

The woman sits, shown to below the waist, facing us with her head tipped very slightly. Dark brown hair is drawn back smoothly. The face is a pale orange-pink with a strong flush on the cheeks; the eyes are pale blue almonds with no pupils, the brows thin, the nose long, the mouth small and dark red, the neck long. She wears a dark green-black top whose whole surface is worked in fine light strokes, as if knitted, and at the neck an irregular white lace collar that stands away from the throat. Just below it sits a small pale oval brooch. Both hands rest low, one over the other. Behind her is a teal-green panel left of centre, a red-brown strip at the far left, a dark brown wall at the right, and a pale grey-white shape low right. The signature modigliani stands in the upper right corner.

Three Lunias on one shelf

⚠️ Three pictures of the same woman stand on this shelf and no two are the same canvas. One shows her in strict profile, copper hair pinned up, in a cream garment against a greenish ground. Another shows her three-quarters on, in a large white blouse that fills almost the whole picture. This third shows her from the front, in a dark knitted garment whose only white is a very small lace collar. That collar is what we have named it after, exactly as the museum does: Femme au col blanc. All three are linked to one another on our pages so that nobody confuses them. Lunia was a young Polish woman who had taken refuge with Zborowski, the painter’s dealer, and his wife Hanka; Modigliani painted her again and again.

The record of the original

The original is oil on canvas. We read the museum record at source: it gives the title Femme au col blanc, the year 1917, the size 81 x 60.2 cm, and how it was acquired — bought from the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune in 1923. The museum does not publish a technique or an inventory number on that page; oil on canvas and the number MG 2195 come from the public Wikidata database and we say where we read them. ⚠️ Our file is the smallest in this set, so we claim nothing about the finest texture of the knitting; the proportions do agree with the museum measurement. We give width first, so on our page it reads 60.2 x 81 cm. Of the sizes we offer, 60 x 80 cm follows the proportions of the original most closely — and it is very nearly the original’s own size — while the others are standard formats and differ from it a little.

What you receive

Our painter works the picture by hand, oil on canvas, at the size you choose. The subject is quiet and collected: a large dark shape of clothing, a warm face above it, and one bright accent — the white collar — holding the whole composition together. A painting like this works in a bedroom, a study or a hallway, where it should settle a wall. Because the collar is small we recommend the middle and larger formats, where the lace genuinely separates. When the canvas is finished we photograph it and send you the photograph for approval before it leaves the studio. You choose the frame in our 3D application, and every fine art reproduction we make is hand-painted and never printed.
