Description
The Departure of the Boats, Étretat was painted in 1885 on the Normandy coast, which Monet returned to for several winters running. The fishing boats stand on the shingle, ready to be launched; behind them the sea lies low and grey, without a single white wave. The shingle is not brown but built from violet, blue and ochre.
The original is oil on canvas, 73.5 × 93.5 cm. It is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, accession number 1922.428.
