Description
On the Banks of the Seine, Bennecourt was painted in 1868. Camille Doncieux sits on the bank looking across the water to the houses opposite; those houses repeat in the river as broad horizontal strokes the painter did not smooth away. It is an early work and already shows what would occupy him to the end: the reflection counts for as much as the thing reflected.
The original is oil on canvas, 81.5 × 100.7 cm, an elongated format. It is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, accession number 1922.427.
