Claude MonetThe Petite Creuse River
Description
The Petite Creuse River is from 1889, from a three-month stay in the Creuse valley in central France. The subject is bare: rocky slopes, narrow water, no building and no figure. The painter worked there in bad weather, and one day paid a local to strip the leaves from a tree — spring had come too early and changed his subject.
The original is oil on canvas, 66 × 93 cm, an elongated format. It is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, accession number 1922.432.
Our reproduction is a hand-painted oil painting on canvas. It is not a print. Every canvas is painted individually by an artist, so no two are ever exactly alike. Browns and violets work well beside darker wood.

“As a painter I have done what I could, and that seems to me enough. I do not wish to be compared to the great masters of the past, and my painting belongs to criticism; that is sufficient.”
