Description

Georges Seurat, Evening, Honfleur (1886)

Evening, Honfleur is a painting of an almost empty shore at dusk: sand, a few wooden posts, still water, and a sky that takes more than half the canvas. Seurat made it in 1886, the year he finished the Grande Jatte. The original is in the Museum of Modern Art, New York, accession 266.1957.

An empty shore

There are almost no people in it. Seurat treats the coast as geometry – horizontals of sand, water and sky, interrupted only by the verticals of the posts. The emptiness is the subject.

The frame he painted himself

The border of this work is painted. Seurat carried his dots out onto the frame so that he controlled the transition from picture to wall. The frame is part of the work, not an addition.

The original

Oil on canvas with a painted wood frame, 94 × 78.3 cm, painted 1886. The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Gift of Mrs. David M. Levy; accession 266.1957.

How yours is made

Every canvas we supply is a hand-painted oil painting, not a print. A painter works it stroke by stroke at the size you choose.
