Description
Arrival of the Normandy Train was painted in 1877 at the Gare Saint-Lazare in Paris. Steam from the locomotive rises under the glass roof and dissolves every solid form; the light falls through the smoke in bands. For this subject the painter was given permission to have trains held and the boilers stoked harder.
The original is oil on canvas, 59.6 × 80.2 cm. It is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, accession number 1933.1158.
