Description
The Gare Saint-Lazare is from 1877. The painter asked permission to work on the platform and set his easel under the glass roof, where the steam of the locomotives gathers and breaks up into light. The blue shadow under the shed and the white steam are the real subjects here; the trains are barely more than dark masses beneath them.
The original is oil on canvas, 75 × 104 cm, an elongated format. It is held by the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, accession number RF 2775.
