Description
Frost is from 1880, from the winter that froze the Seine solid and then broke it up within days. The field in the foreground is white, but there is almost no white in it: it is built from pale blue, rose and grey. The painter worked outdoors that winter in temperatures well below freezing.
The original is oil on canvas, 60.5 × 99.5 cm, a markedly elongated format. It is held by the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, accession number RF 2706.
