Description
Snow Effect in Vétheuil comes from the years Monet lived at Vétheuil, between 1878 and 1881 — the scene is from one of those winters. The snow here is not white: the painter builds it from grey, blue and pale pink strokes, so that the field before the village holds the light instead of throwing it back. Behind it the church tower rises, from which the inventory also takes the work’s second name.
The original is oil on canvas, 52 × 71 cm. It is held by the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, accession number RF 3755, and entered the collection in 1894.
