Description
A Cart on the Snowy Road at Honfleur is from 1867 and is one of the early winter works. The snow here is not white: in shadow it is blue and grey, and along the wheel ruts it turns brownish with mud. The painter worked outdoors in winter with his fingers stiff from the cold — that persistence in front of the subject later became his method.
The original is oil on canvas, 65 × 93 cm, an elongated format. It is held by the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, accession number RF 2011.
