Description
Sandvika, Norway was painted in 1895, during Monet’s only journey north. The village lies under snow, a wooden bridge crosses the frozen river, and a hill rises behind. The snow here is not white but blue and pink — the painter treated northern light exactly as he treated Normandy light: as colour, not as the absence of it.
The original is oil on canvas, 73.4 × 92.5 cm. It is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, accession number 1961.790.
