Description
Zaandam is from 1871, when Monet spent some months in Holland after the Franco-Prussian war. The wooden houses along the canal sit in a narrow band above the water; everything else is sky and reflection. The painter made more than twenty canvases there and said later that the Dutch light had given him work enough for a lifetime.
The original is oil on canvas, 47.8 × 73 cm, an elongated format. It is held by the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, accession number RF 1673.
Our reproduction is a hand-painted oil painting on canvas. It is not a print. Every canvas is painted individually by an artist, so no two are ever exactly alike. Warm browns and blues work well in a dining room.
Meet the artist
Claude Monet
“As a painter I have done what I could, and that seems to me enough. I do not wish to be compared to the great masters of the past, and my painting belongs to criticism; that is sufficient.”
100% hand-painted paintings
Every painting is painted by an artist with a brush on canvas – never a print.
