Description
Self-Portrait was painted in 1917, when Monet was seventy-six and had worked almost entirely at Giverny for a decade. He painted very few self-portraits and destroyed several of them later, so this is among the few that survive. The beard is set down in a handful of broad strokes, and the look is sober, without ornament.
The original is oil on canvas, 70 × 55 cm, an upright format. It is held by the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, accession number RF 2623.
