Meditation, Madame Monet on the Sofa shows Camille Monet, the painter’s first wife, resting with a book in her lap. The scene comes from the early years, when the family lived on very little; the room is dark and her face gathers the only light in the work. He painted his wife more often than anyone else.
The original is oil on canvas, 48.2 × 74.5 cm. It is held by the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, accession number RF 3665. The museum record gives no precise year of execution.
