Claude MonetBanks of the Seine, Vétheuil
Description
Banks of the Seine, Vétheuil was painted in 1880, the year the painter was living in that village in hard circumstances and working almost entirely outdoors. The bank is built from short strokes set side by side that do not blend; only at a few paces do they assemble into grass, scrub and water. That was a deliberate choice, not haste.
The original is oil on canvas, 73.4 × 100.5 cm, an elongated format. It is held by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, accession number 1963.10.177.
Our reproduction is a hand-painted oil painting on canvas. It is not a print. Every canvas is painted individually by an artist, so no two are ever exactly alike. A river subject in greens and blues works well above a low sideboard or a sofa.

“As a painter I have done what I could, and that seems to me enough. I do not wish to be compared to the great masters of the past, and my painting belongs to criticism; that is sufficient.”
