Claude MonetThe Seine at Giverny
Description
The Seine at Giverny is from 1897 and belongs to the group the painter made early in the morning from a boat fitted out as a floating workshop. Mist over the water erases the boundary between bank and reflection, so the trees grow downward as firmly as they grow up. The range is narrow — green, grey, pale rose — and it works precisely because of that.
The original is oil on canvas, 81.5 × 100.5 cm, an elongated format. It is held by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, accession number 1963.10.180.
Our reproduction is a hand-painted oil painting on canvas. It is not a print. Every canvas is painted individually by an artist, so no two are ever exactly alike. A quiet morning range suits a calm room with plenty of daylight.

Claude Monet
“As a painter I have done what I could, and that seems to me enough. I do not wish to be compared to the great masters of the past, and my painting belongs to criticism; that is sufficient.”
