Claude MonetStacks of Wheat (End of Day, Autumn)
Description
Stacks of Wheat (End of Day, Autumn) is from 1890 and belongs to the stacks series, which the painter set up as a test of a single idea: the same object, at another hour, is no longer the same object. The autumn version is warmer than the winter ones — the stubble is gold, and the shadow of the stack runs long across the field and is violet, not grey.
The original is oil on canvas, 65.3 × 100.4 cm, an elongated format. It is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, accession number 1933.444.
Our reproduction is a hand-painted oil painting on canvas. It is not a print. Every canvas is painted individually by an artist, so no two are ever exactly alike. Gold and violet tones work well in a dining room or living room, where they are seen in the evening.

“As a painter I have done what I could, and that seems to me enough. I do not wish to be compared to the great masters of the past, and my painting belongs to criticism; that is sufficient.”
