Description
Cliffs at Pourville is from 1882, the same Normandy season. This time Monet left the figure out: what remains is the chalk wall falling into the water and the wide expanse below it. The format is markedly elongated, so the eye travels horizontally, as if walking the coast. The painter builds the white of the rock out of pinks and blues, never out of pure white.
The original is oil on canvas, 60 × 100 cm. It is held by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, accession number 1985.64.27.
