A történet minden Modigliani-szövegben visszatér: üresen hagyta a szemet, amíg meg nem ismerte az ember lelkét. Szép történet. A mi polcunk ellenőrizni tudja, mert 76 művét tartjuk, és mindegyiket megnéztük – előbb a cella szövegét, aztán magát a festményt. Az eredmény: 53 műnek üres a szeme, 22 műnek nem. Egynél az elérhető felbontáson nem lehetett eldönteni, és így is szerepel.
Amit megszámoltunk
A polc 76 művéből: 53 pupilla nélküli, 17 megfestett pupillával, 3 olyan, ahol az egyik szemnek van pupillája, a másiknak nincs, 2 csukott szemmel, 1 pedig nem eldönthető. A szabály tehát nem áll: a pupilla túl gyakran fordul elő ahhoz, hogy kivétel legyen, az üres szem pedig szokás, nem ígéret.

Minden sor a saját művéhez vezet. A „Mi van a vásznon” oszlop a festmény előtt tett megfigyelés, angolul lejegyezve úgy, ahogyan nézés közben rögzült; nem fordítottuk le, mert minden fordítás eltávolítaná a megfigyelést attól, amit láttunk.

Mit mondanak erről a múzeumok
Mások magyarázatai, mindegyikhez a forrással: a Dallas Museum of Art a saját műve mellett elmondja, hogy az afrikai maszkokat Matisse-szal, Picassóval, Braque-kal és Derainnel együtt csodálta, és hogy a hatás az arc stilizált kezelésén látszik. Az oslói Nasjonalmuseet afrikai szobrászatról ír, amelynek vonalas, megnyújtott stílusa alakjainak a választékos modernség jellegét adta, és egyik saját művénél hozzáteszi, hogy az egyénítő vonások nem voltak jellemzőek a festőre. A Musée de Grenoble a források között az archaikus görög, etruszk és egyiptomi szobrokat nevezi meg. A Yale University Art Gallery kurátora a helyeket is megnevezi: a szobrászatot, amelyet Párizsban látott, többek között a Trocadéróban, és az elefántcsontparti maszkokat. Egyik leírás sem beszél lélekről.
Mi nem ez a lista
Az ítéletek az általunk tartott reprodukció előtt születtek, nem a múzeumi vászon előtt; kis fejeknél és lágy festékfelhordásnál az írisz és az ecsetvonás határa valóságos, és egy műnél ezt inkább elismertük, mint találgattunk. A lista azt mondja meg, mi van a festményen – nem azt, miért van ott.
