Zgodba kroži v vsakem članku o Modiglianiju: oči je pustil prazne, dokler ni spoznal človekove duše. Zgodba je lepa. Naša polica jo lahko preveri, ker imamo 76 njegovih del in vsakega smo pogledali – najprej besedilo celice, nato samo sliko. Rezultat: prazne oči ima 53 del, 22 pa ne. Pri enem se pri razpoložljivi ločljivosti ni dalo razločiti in tako je tudi zapisano.
Kaj smo prešteli
Od 76 del na tej polici: 53 ima oči brez zenic, 17 ima naslikane zenice, pri 3 je eno oko z zenico in drugo brez, pri 2 so oči zaprte, pri 1 pa razsodba ni mogoča. Pravilo torej ne drži: zenice se pojavijo prepogosto, da bi šlo za izjemo, in prazne oči so navada, ne obljuba.

Kaj o tem pravijo muzeji
Razlage, ki jih navajajo drugi, in vir za vsako: Dallas Museum of Art ob svojem delu pove, da so afriške maske občudovali skupaj z Matissom, Picassom, Braquom in Derainom in da je vpliv viden v stilizirani obdelavi obraza.
